Susan S. Katz
Born and raised in Detroit, Susan graduated from University of Michigan and went on to teach for several years. She and her family moved to West Virginia where she returned to school receiving a graduate degree in Psychology and enjoyed a 25 year career as a clinical psychologist. Through the years Susan has been involved in making art as well. Her formal education in the arts has included courses in art history, drawing, pottery, photography, paper making, painting and printmaking. Now, as a full time artist, Susan incorporates these various techniques and ideas in her work. She especially enjoys the challenge of bringing diverse elements together in new and surprising ways.
Finding balance between the invisible world of the psyche and the visible world of the arts is the focus of her journey. The observer’s response to her work is just as important for it multiplies the meaning of the work in a unique way. It allows the creative aspect of discovery to be very personal and continue way beyond the hand of the artist’s creation.
Susan has shown her work in West Virginia, Virginia and Florida galleries. Her images are currently being used for packaging design by Levis Dermatology in New York City. Her work appears in the new monograph on John Kingerlee, a British born artist who has resided in Ireland for more than 20 years. Hopeful projects include installing a six panel batik series in a hospital which Susan envisions using as a vehicle in working with patients in an interactive way, thus combining her knowledge and experience both as a psychologist and an artist.
Susan's work can be found in private collections from coast to coast. In addition she often donates her work to foundations and organizations allowing the sale of her art to underwrite charitable activities, medical research, the arts and other causes which she supports.
